India's COVID-19 vaccinations hit daily record
22 June 2021 -

India administered a record 7.5 million COVID-19 vaccine doses on 21 June 2021 under a federal campaign to inoculate all adults for free, Reuters news agency reported on Tuesday.

The country's prior vaccination record of 4.5 million doses was on 5 April 2021, however this declined with average daily inoculations dropping below three million.

Experts have stated that India needs to administer 10 million doses a day to achieve its aim of inoculating 950 million adults by December 2021.

So far, India has fully vaccinated less than 5% with two doses.

Earlier this month, the Indian government said the country could have as many as 10 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines available per day in July and August 2021.

Currently, India is using domestically made doses of the AstraZeneca (LON: AZN) COVID-19 vaccine and Indian company Bharat Biotech's COVAXIN.

The government is attempting to secure foreign vaccines such as Pfizer's (NYSE:PFE) and has waived strict rules to allow quicker imports, Reuters added.
