Five-year US study highlights long-term effectiveness of ViiV Healthcare's Cabenuva
21 October 2026 -

Specialist HIV company ViiV Healthcare, majority owned by GSK (LON:GSK), with Shionogi as a shareholder, on Wednesday reported five-year real-world data from the US OPERA observational cohort showing sustained viral suppression and treatment persistence among adults with HIV-1 receiving Cabenuva, a long-acting injectable combination of cabotegravir and rilpivirine.

The analysis evaluated 6,955 adults who switched from daily oral antiretroviral therapy to Cabenuva between January 2021 and December 2025, with follow-up through February 2026. Among 6,362 participants who completed their initial two injections within 67 days, 77% remained in care and on treatment, with a median treatment duration of 18 months.

Among 6,058 participants with follow-up viral load measurements, 94% had a last recorded viral load below 50 copies/mL, while 81% maintained viral suppression at every visit. Confirmed virologic failure occurred in 1% of participants.

The study population included 43% Black adults, 32% Hispanic/Latine adults, 23% aged 50 or older and 30% with a body mass index of at least 30 kg/m2. Among 213 confirmed treatment discontinuations, the most frequently reported reasons were adherence issues (28%), loss to care (24%) and preference for another regimen (15%).

ViiV Healthcare will present the findings at IDWeek 2026 in Washington, DC, running 21–24 October.
